Accomplishments: What has CalVEC done?
HAVA: In 2003, CalVEC issued 5 policy papers that would prove seminal in shaping the Secretary of State’s implementation of a new state plan in accordance with HAVA. These policy papers have since been shared with states around the country as models on HAVA issues, covering voter ID, provisional voting, statewide database, voting technology and accessibility for voters with language and disability assistance needs.
Voting Legislation: CalVEC provides information about state legislation that member groups are tracking, the status of the bill, the purpose, and organizational positions. Because CalVEC has served as a collection point of shared knowledge, members rely on this tool to help them keep track of the myriad of state bills that are relevant to their work.
Poll Monitoring / Voter Education: During election season, CalVEC members have been able to collaborate on efforts ranging from hotlines to poll monitoring to sharing voter education materials. In the 2003 Special Election, a host of problems related to voter confusion and election administration were identified across the state. CalVEC was able to assemble an agenda and meet with the Secretary of State and relevant registrars to begin addressing those issues.
